Sandy Mukherjee

ST. ALBANS CRICKET CLUB LOSES A FAVOURITE SON.

Sandy Mukherjee, a life member of the club, died at the QE2 hospital on Thursday 28th May after a short illness.

73 year old Sandy, a highly respected  and brilliant electrical engineer , graduated from Bengal Engineering College, Calcutta where he gained Blues in cricket ,hockey and football . He arrived in this country with his close friend Subhas Bose in 1965 with the intention of touring Europe, but both enjoyed the cricket ,hockey and beer so much they stayed and both eventually became British citizens.

Sandy [real name Subrata] played in all XI’S for the club as a medium paced in-swing bowler and unorthodox, but effective batsman. He captained both the 2nd & 3rd XI’s ,was club captain, bar manager, a tireless and very successful fund raising manager ,a motivational Chairman, and most recently President of the club he loved and gave so much to.

However, his greatest passion was to bring along the next generations of cricketers and he ran the colts section of the club for more than a decade. Although not a highly qualified coach ,he taught them the game of cricket. He was greatly respected by all of them and their parents, many of whom he commandeered into working for the club---it was difficult to say “no” to Sandy. In 1992 his under 15’s were county champions. He liked his boys to win but most importantly he wanted them to share his great love for the game and to play it in the right spirit

Sandy made a lot of friends in cricket and in hockey, just as he did in his working life as a director of Alan Electrical, a company he helped to set up.

He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. To know Sandy was a delight, to have him as a friend was very special.

His funeral will be held at Garston Crematorium on Tuesday 16th June at 2p.m. No flowers. Donations if desired to Grove House c/o Phillips Funerals, Dartmouth House,68 Alma Road, St. Albans, AL1 3BL
