Match report St.Albans IIIs season finally got underway at Hertford, with a tight and well-earned draw.
Batting first, Saints witnessed an opening over that saw the ball sprayed all over the shop - this looked very much like the start of a new season. After a second over indiscretion from Nisar, Shah (54) and Crisp (50) stroked the ball well, moving the score to 84/1 after 16 overs. Thereafter a combination of wiley bowling, injudicious shot selection and some umpiring decisions that on another day may have gone the other way, saw the IIIs collapse. A patient 28no from James, with valuable last wicket support from Bottoms, lead to a 49.2 over total of 50.
Little, Bottoms, and a run out, left Hertford at 22/3. From there the home team rebuilt, a series of partnerships accumulating runs - but Saints were never out of it on a slow, but improving wicket. Ypey's guile continually threatened against a lineup looking to attack him. With Christie keeping the runs in check at the other end, and a stellar all round effort in the field, Saints kept persisted.
With eight runs to get, and two overs remaining, Ypey bowled a wicket maiden to conclude a superb spell. Now the equation was more interesting - and with the 9th wicket falling second ball of the final over, the odds swung back to the visitors. That last wicket remained elusive, but Saints finished positive.
Encouraging early season signs for the thirds then - newcomers, youth, and good fielding all contributing to a good day of cricket.
