Wembley v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 21 Jul 2013 at 2.00pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 54 runs

Match report A patient innings of 71 from Dave Ashton, 4 important wickets from Kevin Milton, some superb bowling and fielding from the entire team and an incredible catch from Harry Saunders at short leg with one ball remaining were the decisive factors in a 54 run win for St Albans.

After winning the toss St Albans went into bat with Mark Telkman (11) and Sriram Subramanian (20) opening – a brisk start saw them both get off to a fast start playing some beautiful shots before losing their wickets prematurely just as they were starting to get into a scoring groove. Jon Hollis came at number 3 and bludgeoned a quick 13 before Dave Ashton came to the crease. A slow , patient start saw him accumulate runs steadily and without fuss while others around him accelerated the scoring rate . Jonno Burt, making his first appearance for the club for a while, smashed 11 quick runs and Jack Ypey's classy 37 was a great example of limited overs batting. All the time Dave Ashton batted on, first reaching a quality half century and then scoring a series of fine boundaries before finally succumbing on 71. Wicketkeeper Ben Hicks also showed what a consistent player he is becoming by notching 21 down the order. Skipper Andy Saunders had to come out and face the last ball and was run out by son Harry as he tried to scramble home for a suicidal second run…. At the close of the innings St Albans had put 202 runs on the board , a fine effort on a suspect pitch pitch with a variable low bounce..

After a fine tea Harry Saunders and James Dempsey provided an opening dual seam attack as St Albans set out to bowl out Wembley CC. The oppositions opening pair were clearly talented players and both Harry and James did well to pin them down to a slow scoring rate in the early stages with some accurate, aggressive bowling. Harry made the first breakthrough when a mistimed drive went to Saunders senior at mid on before James picked up the wicket of the other opener. Enter spin king Kevin Milton who turned the game decisively in St Albans favour with a 8 over spell that saw him pick up 4 crucial wickets to end with figures of 8-1-41-4. Mark Telkman bowled with guile and style at the other end and found serious turn, which had the batsmen tied up in knots. His 2 wickets were well deserved and perhaps not a reflection of the quality of his bowling which ended with superb figures of 9-4-28-2. The fielding had been superb with no dropped catches and some really committed stops all over the pitch. With only 1 wicket remaining and time running out to secure the win Jack Ypey (3.5-3-4-1) and Andy Saunders (2-1-1-0) came into the attack and with men all round the bat of both remaining batsmen attempted to find the killer ball to win the game. The last 3 overs were a blockathon with both batsman getting forward and steadfastly resisting any attempts to tempt them into a rash shot before, with just one ball remaining, the batsmen pushed at a good length delivery from Ypey which Harry Saunders , fielding a short leg, somehow managed to snaffle up at ground level. Game over and a brilliant victory secured right at the death.
