Preston III v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 25 May 2013 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 15 runs

Match report An excellent win in a competitive game of 4th XI cricket. A real team effort with all 11 players contributing to an exciting win.

Stuck in on a very wet and slow track the 4's were up against it. Rudlin and James started cautiously but saw through the first 7 overs. Sadly the hard work was undone by a couple of straight ones and we were soon 17-2. Step forward the experience of Emerson (Snr) & Afroz Khan. The two senior pro's took their time getting used to the pace of the wicket and built an excellent 99 run partnership, only ended by a run out for the tiring legs of Emerson for an assured 53. Khan kept things going with a few brief partnerships before falling for an excellent 51. Faz Nissar stepped forwards and took us to the full batting points with a handy 23 not out. With full batting points in the bag a declaration was made after 46 overs, setting Preston 173 to win in 44 overs.

The youngsters then took over with the ball, Callum Emerson and Zach West sharing the new ball and keeping things tight and West making the initial breakthrough hitting the off stump and removing one of the openers. Preston then followed the earlier example of pacing the innings and building a partnership to reach drinks at 90-1 off 23 overs - the game in the balance. St A's had a rallying chat and came out after the drinks break with renewed purpose. Dave Hancock made the breakthrough, inviting an uppish drive with a good catch taken in the covers by Nissar. Then the real turning point in the game came, Faz Nissar grabbed the ball and with it the game. An excellent spell of leg spin bowling, supported by some good catching, reduced Preston to 140-7. The oppo needed 33 to win from the last 7 overs with 2 wickets left (only 10 men). Nick James was introduced to the attack and having been held back so long, was like a caged tiger. In only his second over he knocked the middle stump over and brought us to the brink of victory. Fittingly the game was then wrapped up by Faz taking his 5th wicket, caught at deep mid wicket with just 15 runs to spare.

Faz finished with an excellent haul of 5-19 and the 30 points were secured. The all round effort, commitment in the field, application with the bat and persistence with the ball were all commendable and brought the due rewards. An excellent win in a feisty and competitive game of league cricket. Roll on next week......
