St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 38 runs

Match report Saints IIIs once again suffered batting woes, falling well short of a modest target at Ware.

There were mitigating circumstances, however, for the picturesque Widford Cricket Ground harboured a less than friendly pitch, making batting difficult throughout.

Saints chose to bowl first, with Winfield and Townend keeping a cap on things, but it was 38 before the first wicket fell - perhaps tellingly this proved to be the largest partnership of the match. Still's wicket to wicket line then yielded 3/28. By midway through Ware's innings, the wicket was playing a few tricks, with some surprising bounce, and going hard at the lose deliveries was the best strategem. Thus it was that Walker was able to nab 5/30, in a pleasing return to the side. All round a good effort with the ball and in the field.

Skipper Eames assessed the total of 141 as probably a little over par, but still it did not look too challenging - until the Ware bowlers found their line and length. After Murray's 26, only Telkman and Eames reached double figures as Knott (3/31) and Patel (4/34) bowled long and incisive spells. The slow and unpredictable pitch inevitably played its part in numerous dismissals, having deteriorated since the start of play, but it was disappointing that no-one was able to push through the difficulty.

In reaching just 103, Saints fell 38 runs short, comfortably second best - and uncomfortably returning to the bunker with another loss weighing us down.
