Match report After an arduous week for the selectors St Albans arrived at Wembley with 8 men in a fixture that was close to cancellation at 11am. A big thank you to the Fishers contingent and Andrew Tinkler for stepping in at the last minute and putting his body on the line to support the Saints fielding effort. Thanks also to Wembley CC for providing 2 players.

Having lost the toss St Albans were in the field first against a strong Wembley X1 comprised of first and second teamers. The Wembley opening pair got off to a good start but just as they were getting set Alfie Tinkler who opened the bowling for Saints got the break through; bowling Shah on 30 as he was coming to the end of his 5 over spell. The other young Wembley opener Chandresaker went on to get 107 not out well supported by batsmen 3 and 4. A tough session in the field with some decent spells of bowling in particular from Tinkler and Nick who picked up wickets. A commendable display of Wicket Keeping from the Senior Melling (Matt) on his keeping debut.

So after having amassed 254 Wembley declared after 34 overs giving themselves circa 50 overs to bowl St Albans out for victory.

Manny and Matt Melling opened the batting for St Albans and got the team off to a good start against quality seam bowling. In an opening partnership of 66 and having seen off the new ball, Manny was first to go on 46 and Matt (batting for the first time for Saints this season) followed not long after having contributed a very valuable 23 runs. Nick Betts at no 3 then provided some further impetus to the run chase adding a quick fire 45 supported by some useful contributions in the middle order (Alfie, Pete Melling). And so with the light fading and St Albans down to 8 batsmen due a couple who had to leave early it was left to Andy Melling to successfully block out at the end with Wembley needing just one wicket to win.

A good batting performance by St Albans in the circumstances to draw the game against a stronger but very sporting Wembley team. A game played in the right spirit with everyone contributing and enjoying the day.
