St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Potters Bar III on Sat 25 Jul 2015 at 1:00pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report The IIIs entered this game with a slender lead at the top of the Division 8A ladder, with opponents Potters Bar not far behind. Could they extend their advantage in a tightly fought competition?

After a damp Friday, it was a surprise to see the opposition choose to bat first on a wicket that looked spongey, so Saints took some confidence into the field (in some cases, accompanied by hangovers). Three early wickets left the visitors at 33-3, but Potters Bar recovered their poise and rode their luck. Weerasinghe and Fernando combined to frustrate the bowlers with a number of balls in the air, and saw some chances fail to stick. Telkman finally ended a 93 run partnership and continued to maintain a good line to keep the run rate in check, which in turn brought wickets. With O'Neill toiling away at the other end, Potters Bar finished on an all out total of 191 after 52 overs. Telkman's fine figures of 5/35 were an accurate reflection of his nagging stint.

The wicket had in truth played surprisingly well, and 191 represented a decent recovery for Saints when the visitors had threatened to get away.

Rudlin and Kindlen were sent out to open and immediately found their rhythm, crucially finding ways to score even on a slow wicket. After reaching 75 in 15 overs, Kindlen's 34 was ended with a controversial LBW decision. Rudlin continued on to 51 before needlessly offering a post-tea catch, and then Watkins completed a dirty day with a duck. The run rate was slowing and the pressure mounting. But Karunanayake (48) and Tom O'Toole (an invaluable 26 not out) dug in to add 54 which saw off the better options of a bowling attack that leaned heavily on the slow side. This was almost enough to bring victory, but without any big overs, the required rate held at 4 and 5 an over. Thus it was the 48th over - the last available - that O'Toole senior finally settled the nerves with a straight boundary.

A very solid win, then, for the IVs, edging a few points further ahead on the ladder, but with the top six sides separated by less than a win. There is much more to play for.
