St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 24 runs

Match report In a game of ebbs and flows, the IIIs had only themselves to blame for defeat at Hertford following a calamitous collapse in the chase.

At Balls Park, the hosts surprisingly chose to bat first, with clouds again threatening to dampen this rain-filled summer.

Little and Everdell soon had the better of the experienced top order batting line-up, after some injudicious swipes. From a score of 3/16, Riddle held the innings together, but his departure for 40 left the tally on 5/82 after 35 overs - Saints were riding high. But a change in the game's direction was afoot, as the younger brigade of Timms and Orchard set about their task wisely and sharply, to add 72 in 16 overs. Perhaps a bowler short on the day, Saints allowed the tally to reach 166 in the maximum 53 overs. Credit goes to Little (4/27) and Everdell (2/33) for their 15 over spells at the top.

Refreshed by a fine tea, and taking confidence from a benign wicket and a short boundary, Saints were positive despite Hertford's late recovery. Karunanayake, looking untroubled, played some imperious strokes and had added 67 with Crisp in 19 overs, before an ill-judged run saw him well short, out for 38. Crisp and debutant Shah (32), and then Adshead, continued the run-scoring, and the watching lower order relaxed as the runs required fell below 50, with 8 wickets in hand.

In the hands of most teams, victory should have been assured from this point, but then came a remarkable - though, for Saints, not unique - collapse. From a position of strength at 2/121, disaster struck time and again, as numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 failed to muster a single run between them. Before much longer, the IIIs were all out, having lost 8/21 - not wanting to wallow in numbers, its worth noting that the partnership sequence was 5, 0, 0, 0, 0, 4, 4 and 8. From a decent line-up, this was deplorable.

On a good pitch, against bowling that was nothing more than persistent, this was surely one of our most embarrassing efforts, a true omnishambles. Behind the anguish that resulted from this collective harikari, there was surely the thought - "aren't we are better than this?"
