St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Hertford IV on Sat 03 Sep 2016 at 12:30
Match was Abandoned

Match report The 2016 League season finished in desultory fashion, with rain bringing a premature end to proceedings.

With a forecast for later rain, and rugby posts infringing upon the playing field, there was certainly a late-season feel as Saints started with the ball. The name of the game for Saints was bonus points - six was the number in question, and that would ensure relegation would be avoided.

Hertford had their own battle to play - sitting in the relegation zone, they needed a good tally of points and some other results to help them out. They made a fine start in the breezy conditions despite good efforts from Saint's openers Button and Ralfe. The score had reached 121 before a second wicket feel, to Haseeb. Youngster Timms, with a composed 102, and Mohammed (an aggressive 66) took the tally forward, and Saints still had only two bowling points on the board entering the 46th over. But a late comeback brought success. Karunanayake, bowling the final over, claimed two wickets, and then combined with Crisp for a third time to steal a run out - a rather odd finish from Hertford.

There were muted celebrations as the sixth wicket was taken, with 270 runs already on the board. Things hadn't worked out for Saints all afternoon - slopping fielding, missed catches, unlucky edges, poor umpiring decisions, the unpleasant weather - and all the while with rain on the horizon.

Saints took the field and lost three wickets before Ingham showed his class. Then the rain set in, progressively gaining in strength. Eventually the skippers had to concede that play would not be able to resume. The three wickets claimed by Hertford, combined with their maximum batting tally, proved crucial for the visitors who crept out of the relegation zone.

Other results meant that Saints had risen to fifth on the League table, though less than a win ahead of relegated Northwood Town, illustrating just how keenly fought Division 8A was. A season of promise for the IIIs - results against the top 3 teams: 4 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss - was undermined by a little inconsistency. But with a string of youngsters coming through, and others promoted to the seconds, the IIIs should be happy with what was a fair final standing. Next stop: 2017.
