Langleybury III v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 1 run
Match report
On the first Saturday of the summer, Saint Albans IIIs suffered a heartbreaking one run loss to Langleybury at Hunton Bridge, a disappointment after a hard fought contest.
Walker was unable to win the toss, and so Langleybury batted first on a firm but grassy wicket. Joe Button very quickly found his line and length in an economical opening spell, while at the other end brother Alfie took an over or so to work up to a decent pace, which then yielded two early wickets, the second a good take by Cunnington behind the stumps.
From this point, a dogged rather than dominant partnership between the experienced pair of Vernon (42) and Roe (59) carried the innings forward, in the face of persistent bowling from Watkins and Melling. Wyldes (2/47) and Satsangi (2/28) were able to nick out a few wickets and so the hosts were unable to lift their run rate much over 3.5 an over. While the fielding was generally good, there were some notable exceptions and some dropped catches that crucially allowed a few extra runs to be added.
Still, the skipper was pleased with a hard working effort in the field that kept the total to 179, reckoned by the hosts to be about par.
An early dismissal brought together Gemmill and Karunanayake (33), the latter finding runs easier to come by than any other batsman on the day, so it was a shame to see him depart with total on 67. At the half way mark, Saints were exactly half way to their target, but lost a 4th wicket at that point. By this time, Langleybury had turned to their pace off the ball options, and on the slow wicket, it was necessary to pounce on the loose deliveries to keep the score moving. This is exactly what Alfie Button and Wyldes were able to do, their positivity silencing the locals.
Button continued with his sumptuous cover drives, but with a longer look to the tail, there were a few nerves about. A few tight overs kept the equation interesting, inducing a little less caution amongst the batting lineup. So it was that the final over arrived, with 3 runs to get, and just the one wicket in hand. A scampered single brought Alfie Button a well deserved 50, but that proved to be the last run of the match.
Langleybury were understandably delighted; Saint Albans were crestfallen. The nature of such a narrow margin only serves to highlight that every run counts, every error magnified in hindsight, but with no one incident to blame. The past two weeks have seen contributions from every member of the team in true all round performances. Let's not lose heart, for the direction of the IIIs is all good.
