St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Ware I on Sat 19 Aug 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report St Albans arrived at the Sandpit Lane Cricket Ground eager to put right the result of the previous week, and in doing so managed to produce a convincing 8-wicket win.

In a turn of events, the Saints’ players arrived to the meet on time, and so skipper Telkman decided this would be an opportune moment to begin introducing ‘standards’ to the 3s. A thorough warm-up followed and the Saints players returned to the changing room before play raring to go (a few bruised fingers aside).

St. Albans won the toss and elected to field first.

Opposition, Ware, were only able to field 9 players and as a result the Ware’s opening batsmen were perhaps overly cautious in the initial overs. Having said this, opening bowlers Telkman and Baylis Jnr bowled with admirable discipline and the run rate did not rise above 2 in the opening 10 overs. With scoreboard pressure building, the first breakthrough came with the introduction of 3s leading wicket-taker, Murphy, who went on to take 1-17 off his 7 overs. Once the first wicket fell, wickets continued to tumble on a regular basis, with Hicks (4-11) and Watkins (3-17) claiming the stand-out figures, fully reflecting the quality of their respective spells. Though credit should go to all the St. Albans bowlers for their collective efforts. In the end, Ware could only muster 85 “all out” against an exceptional all-round bowling and fielding performance by St. Albans.

With an excellent first half under their belts, St. Albans needed a clinical batting performance to seal victory. Despite Gemmill falling in the first over of the innings, the St. Albans chase rattled along thanks to a combination of wayward bowling and strong shot making. Aggressive striking from Seagrave, including a trademark maximum over mid wicket, and mature batting from Knill-Jones Jnr and Watkins ensured that there were no hiccups. Saints chased down the modest total in a little over 15 overs and so capped a stellar performance, with the clubs youth section once again providing vital contributions throughout.

The win puts the 3XI 34 points clear of the relegation zone, with a good points haul needed from one of the final 2 games to ensure a solid mid-table finish.
