Match report A battling performance by the 10 men of St Albans 4XI saw them chase down a decent score of 179 to record a convincing 6 wicket win on the opening day of the league season .

Impressive half centuries from John Webber (his debut 50) and Andy Loe saw Saints home on an undulating Astro pitch .

Earlier, having won the toss and electing to field , Saints bowlers worked hard to contain the batsmen. Short boundaries and a fast outfield meant any loose balls were punished but by and large the bowling was tight. Opener Tim Winfield got the ball swinging from the off and was unlucky not to take a wicket, with Andrew Melling claiming first blood after some hostile short stuff led to one of the opening batsman being caught behind. Adam Murphy and Jon Little kept things tight with Murphy the victim of several sloppy dropped catches in the same over preventing him from ending up with anything in the wickets column. It was the introduction of Dave Ashton and skipper Andy Saunders though that precipitated the wickets tumbling , the pair taking 7 between them in their combined 15 overs, Ashton particularly impressive with 4-34 from his 8 overs.

179 then, which looked liked a solid total to chase. Saints opening bat Manny Nisar was looking in imperious form before being run out just after reaching double figures after attempting a suicidal run out with his opening partner, 15 year old Adam Murphy looking comfortable in the role before succumbing LBW on 8. Najib Khan went the same way for a duck , which brought former skipper John Webber and wicketkeeper Andy Loe to the crease. With a previous best of 49 to his name Webber set about dismantling the opposition bowling with some lovely cover drives and cut shots, ably supported by Loe who was steadily accumulating runs at the other end. A hundred partnership from the pair followed with Webber recording his first ever 50 (he'd been stuck on a previous top score of 49 forever) and Andy Loe joining him on a hard earned half century. Webber eventually succumbed on 58 leaving Loe (54 no) and Dave Ashton to bring Saints home with 4 overs to spare.

A great start to this season's league campaign.
