Shenley Village IV v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 27 May 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report An under-strength St Albans 4XI's were left to rue a lack of runs as Shenley Village 4XI recorded their first victory of the season.

After losing the toss, St Albans were put into bat in sunny conditions on the nursery ground at Shenley Cricket Centre. Openers Longbottom and Salahin made a cautious start as Shenley's bowlers delivered probing opening spells. Longbottom (6) finally broke the shackles with a lofted boundary but was bowled the following ball, bringing skipper Webber to the crease. Things didn't get any easier with Webber bowled for 10 and Patel run out for 2 attempting a sharp single that probably wasn't there. Following a change in bowling, Salahin started to find his rhythm, picking off singles and then boundaries. At the other end O'Grady was soon in to the groove, scoring a flurry of 4s and 6s and taking the score past 50. Salahin eventually succumbed after compiling a composed 32 and was immediately followed by a first ball duck for debutant Roseman, who was clean bowled by a peach of a delivery. O'Grady's dismissal for 33, caught in the deep, marked the beginning of the end as Coulson (9), Harper (0) and Winfield (6) were soon picked off, the latter pair falling to two sharp catches.

With just 103 on the board, it was always going to be a struggle for St Albans to manufacture a win, particularly with only 10 players. Salahin (1-26) and Roseman (0-22) opened up and despite some tidy bowling, the highlight being Salahin's rapid yorker to dismiss Shenley's no.2 batsman, their bad balls were punished and Shenley amassed their first 40 runs in short order. The introduction of Coulson (0-13) and Winfield (2-14) did little to stem the runs initially, but once they found their line and length, two quick wickets soon fell. Harper (2-9) and Kumar (1-11) continued to slow the run rate and with 6 wickets down, 30 runs still required and two young batsman at the crease, St Albans sniffed a chance of victory. However, despite tight bowling from Patel (1-9) and Kumar at the end, Shenley continued to pick off the runs, hitting the winning boundary in the 27th over.
