Mill Hill Village III v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 05 Aug 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report St Albans IV 145-10 (37.0) lost to Mill Hill Village III 146-3 (28.4)

St Albans IVs avoided the rain but slipped to a heavy defeat against Mill Hill Village IIIs, which sees them remain in the relegation battle at the bottom of Regional Division A West.

In damp conditions very reminiscent of the previous few weekends, Saints once again lost the toss and were put into bat when they would much rather have bowled. The opening pair negotiated the first few overs without incident, Nisar scoring quickly while Ashton batted more circumspectly. Nisar was bowled for 18 two balls into the fifth over, bringing Khan to the wicket to pick up where he left off the week before but with 50 on the board early in the 11th over, the first cluster of wickets fell; Khan caught for 20, Ashton bowled for 13 and Pelham run out for 1 to leave Saints reeling on 53-4. When Kanchwala departed in the 17th over with the score 66-5, it looked like the innings could be over quickly, but Webber and Coulson combined to steady the ship, batting cautiously at first but picking off the bad balls when they came. Drinks were reached without further incident and afterwards the runs started to come more easily as the 100 came up in the 25th over. However, three more quick wickets - Webber bowled for 24, Coulson caught on 19 and Everdell bowled for 3 by a ball that barely left the floor - put Mill Hill back in the ascendancy. Arif (13), Melling (8) and Kumar (7*) kept Mill Hill honest and helped Saints to reach 145, but the target felt well below par.

Two wickets in Everdell's first over, both caught by Khan - the first a particularly fine diving catch in the covers - gave Saints some early hope. Both Everdell (2-33) and Melling (0-15) regularly beat the bat in their opening spells but got no further reward as Salahudin and Mazeez dampened the early optimism by dispatching any bad balls offered to the boundary to keep Mill Hill well ahead of the required rate. Kumar (0-37) was initially threatening but offered too many loose deliveries, which meant that he and Ashton (0-12) were able to slow the scoring rate. Mill Hill's 100 and Salahudin's 50 came up shortly after the drinks break as Saints hopes faded and heads started to drop. They were briefly revived by Pelham's first ball, a beauty that turned sharply to clean bowl Mazeez for 40. That was as good as it got for Saints with some clean hitting from Salahudin (69) and Dulkernan (14) seeing Mill Hill reach their target in the 29th over for the loss of just 3 wickets.

Ultimately, Saints could have no complaints; too many of their batsman had failed to capitalise on good starts and their bowlers offered too many four balls to put any pressure on the opposition's batsmen.
