Totteridge Millhillians 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 28 Jun 2008 at 1.30pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost maybe...
St Albans lost the toss and were asked to bowl, the conditions suited batting perfectly and some very wayward bowling allowed Totteridge Millhillians off to a flying start, Saints never recovered from this and although we did take 7 wickets the runs were always flowing for Tots on a small ground and on a good track we were set a challenging 299 to win from 54 overs, with only Mike Curtis (1 for 28 of 8) returning with respectable figures.
Tots took the negative option and started the 2nd innings with an old ball, due to some "confusion" it was not the old ball the 1st innings was finished with but a rather ragged, soft, very old one!
After some lengthy discussions the ball was finally changed in the 7th over for a suitable used league ball as Totts could not locate the 1st innings specimen, with the "new" old ball being less than 150 overs old it started coming on to the bat a bit better and the runs began to flow for the Saints.
Saints got off to a reasonable start and were up with the rate with Rowlands (64), Vijender (22) and Cook (29) all contributing with the bat. Poor shot selection (resulting in the Special Brew Award) denied Rowlands the possibility of a maiden league century for the 2XI. Phil Dorsett worried Totts with a good 60 as Saints kept up with the required rate. Sadly for Saints the batsmen 5 through 10 managed 23 between them with only Longhurst (15 not out ) managing double figures in the second half of the batting line up. An improvement next week is needed.
