Match report On a sunny Sunday afternoon St. Albans faced a somewhat under par Old Albanians side at Clarence Park. Having turned up half an hour after the supposed start time the St. Albans team did not expect much from the visiting team, having already thrashed them previously in the season.
Bowling first, the St. Albans opening bowlers attacked the OA’s batsmen immediately. After several plays and misses and some suspicious umpiring decisions Martin ‘Fanta-pants’ Jones removed the openers in style. Charlie Smith gave great support, removing one of the OA’s batsmen with a half tracker that somehow managed to hit the bottom of leg-stump. Sayf Khan bowled extremely well for his three wickets and with some superb catching, and bowling, from new-comer Joel Driscoll the St. Albans managed to bowl out a woeful OA’s side for a miserable 72.
The St. Albans opening pair of Sharp and Goodfellow looked like seeing St. Albans cruise to victory inside twenty overs when Sharp was dismissed. This brought Charlie Smith to the crease having been pushed up the order by his captain from 11 to 3 carrying orders from the team that the winning runs must be hit with a switch-hit. Needing 4 to win Smith performed a switch-hit cover drive for 3 giving Goodfellow strike and one needed for victory. With shouts of ‘Switch it!’ from the team, Goodfellow got onto one knee and hit one of the greatest shots ever witnessed at club level. Switching-hitting it behind square for six to win the match, brought tears of happiness to many of the team members looking on. A thoroughly deserved win against a shockingly bad OA’s side sees the Saints go marching on in the Chess Valley League.
