St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Flitwick III on Sat 19 May 2018 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 59 runs

Match report Let’s begin here by offering a note of thanks to those who responded to the club’s plea for extra names earlier in the week; without these, St Albans CC would barely have been able to field three sides, with the penalties that entertains.

For this third round fixture, Saints’ opponents were Flitwick, a well credentialled outfit. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat on a warm and sunny afternoon, with another lush Sandpit Lane outfield to contend with.

Everdell and Moksudul opened the bowling, and Moksy nabbed the first two wickets - amongst a bit of a mixed bag of deliveries it must be said - and Flitwick were 46/2 after 12 overs. The game changed at that point, with Kumar and Walker taking up the bowling. Walker’s first two deliveries yielded wickets, the second one a plumb LBW of opposing skipper Summerfield, a great one to have out of the way. That LBW delivery had shot along the ground which put the visitors on notice, and they went into their shells, tamed by accurate bowling. Kumar, bowling his leggies with the odd googly, showed immaculate control and deserved better than his one wicket, garnered from the final delivery of his ten over spell - 1/18. Walker, was a little more fortunate, finishing with the fine figures of 10/3/9/4.

Just 29 runs had come from these 20 overs, leaving Flitwick’s tally at 75/5 after 32 overs; St Albans were well placed. Everdell returned to complete his spell, his passion alone deserving wickets. The challenge now was to eke out ten overs from the virtual fifth bowler from an inexperienced or out of practice line-up, the curse of 50 over cticket. This task was hampered by a few missed chances, but mostly by a fine innings from Coyne, at first dogged, then feisty, and finally aggressive. His 80 not out, and a partnership of 101 with Qamar (33) - broken only by an outstanding direct hit run out from deep cover - thoroughly turned the game around. Perhaps the skipper had erred in arranging his bowling line-up.

189 was now the target, and the chase didn’t start well as Ferguson received a delivery that stayed low. This brought Mohammed Ishaq (“Shah”) to the wicket, returning to the team after an absence of 12 months, and he showed his quality and power. Unfortunately those around him got themselves starts before finding ways to get out. Shah, too, perished as he looked to lift the run rate, out for a well made for 39. The game looked to be up, but it was encouraging to see youngster Josh Mulvaney show great composure with the bat in his first senior game at this level, while Kumar - second best score with 18 not out - showed the benefit of his England Lions coaching. These two were able to take the score into the bonus points tally.

The threes thus ended 59 runs short of their target, a major disappointment considering the position a third of the way into the match. Flitwick’s response to their predicament at the point was commendable, and a valuable lesson to all. Still, St Albans somewhat makeshift XI should take heart from some good performances against a quality opponent as they move onto their next fixtures.
