Match report Winning the toss the skipper had no hesitation in batting on a good looking track at Sandpit Lane against top of the table Bushey.
St Albans were looking to improve on their previous encounter with Bushey, when the 4s were knocked over for their lowest total of the season, 27.
Tom Mumford and Sachin Patel opened and were looking comfortable against the opening pace bowlers. Tom was unlucky to be out, to a well taken one-handed catch at first slip. A couple of loose shots against the accurate openers saw St Albans in trouble at 16-3 in the 3rd over. However Sam Mistry(18) and Tom Wyldes(26) put together a 57 run partnership, before Tom fell to another good catch. Dave Hancock and Steve Steinmetz had brief cameos, but at 130-9 after 27 overs St Albans were looking unlikely to post a competitive score. However Bilal Siddique (25) and Andy Knill-Jones (15*) batted for another 8 overs to frustrate the Bushey attack and finish on 164 all out. Quite a few short of the par score, but at least something to bowl at. Bushey had bowled and fielded to a very high standard, taking all their opportunities - we would need to do the same.
With 10 bowlers in the St Albans team there were plenty of options available and St Albans got off to a great start with Patel striking in the first over. Unfortunately in the next 5 overs 3 regulation catches were spilled and the Bushey batsmen took charge, working the ball to the boundary with ease, helped by some unusually inconsistent bowling. Another couple of half chances were not taken, and Bushey had raced to 121-1 in 15 overs. St Albans did manage to take 2 further catches but sadly the damage was done and Bushey had won by 7 wickets, with almost half their overs unused.
If the catching chances had stuck in the first few overs it may have been a much closer game, but on the day Bushey were the stronger team in all areas of the game.
Hopefully the 4s can return to winning ways next week, when Northampton Exiles visit Sandpit Lane.
