Match report A beautiful day at Clarence Park for the penultimate Sunday 40/40 friendly of the season against London side N2 CC.

Skipper Andy Saunders having lost the toss was asked to field and opted for an opening seam attack of Ben Adshead and Ashish Dean with the new ball. Adshead struck first, clean bowling the opening bat, before Dean took the next 3 wickets finishing with a laudable 3-12 from his 5 overs.

John Little and Altaf Husain came on first change and each bowled tight spells, with Little particularly unlucky not to take any wickets. Bilal Siddique took 2-13 with some impressively controlled medium pace and Harvey Scott’s hostile deliveries (and demeanor) intimidated the batsmen but went unrewarded.

Although one of the opposition batsmen hit a well-constructed half century he was poorly supported by his teammates and when the slow bowling pair of Saunders and Gyan Rhodes were introduced their innings was quickly wrapped up for an under par 114.

A fantastic tea courtesy of the Pelham ladies was much admired before Saunders sent Harvey Scott and Peter Melling out to start the chase. Scott hit a quickfire 27 before holing out and Melling was caught behind minutes later after unwisely chasing a wide one.

To the crease came the rarely seen Toby Crisp, fresh from wicket keeping duties, and Gyan Rhodes who took a no-nonsense approach to the variable bowling on offer. Rhodes eventually succumbed on a well-made 38 , which brought Wilf Rush in for a cameo as he and Crisp , who finished on an unbeaten 27, saw Saints home in serene fashion with 17 overs to spare.

A good performance, everyone participated in some way, a great tea, friendly opposition who stayed for a drink afterwards – this is what Sunday friendly cricket is all about …..
