Match report The Club XI travelled to N London to play Crouch End in a friendly.
Some heavy overnight rain had left the pitch with a very soft and patchy surface. So losing the toss St Albans were unsurprisingly put in to bat. The variable bounce and slow pitch caused all sorts of problems for the top order. John Webber was looking in control until he was unluckily out to an inside edge. Pankaj Bhasin was also striking the ball well until he was out to one that hugged the pitch.
13 for 3 in the 7th over very quickly became 40-6 in the 13th , and it appeared the match would be over well before tea. However some stubborn batting from Knill-Jones building partnerships with Bilal Siddique (27) and then Ali Rafique (12*) allowed St Albans to start to build a total. When Knill-Jones fell in the 25th over the remaining wickets fell quickly and St Albans were all out for 100 after 28 overs.
A low total to defend but St Albans started well, Ali Rafique (5-4-5-1) bowled really well picking up the first wicket in the 3rd over, a good catch by Ciaran Walsh, and Crouch End not yet off the mark. However with the pitch now dry and flat the new batsman was picking off any loose deliveries, hitting 3 sixes in his quick fire 45 from 30 balls. Sam Mistry (4-0-14-1) eventually removed him with a good yorker. Kavisha Waidyaratne also bowled very consistently finishing with 4-1-7-1. Bilal Siddique (7-3-24-0) and John Webber (5-1-11-0) bowled some great spells and should have picked up wickets as several edges should have been taken.
Crouch End reached the target with 9 overs to spare.
A good game, a friendly opposition, only identified on Friday (thanks Hugo), and some good performances. (The skipper will try harder to win the toss next time!)
