Match report Skipper Kevin Milton lost the toss and St Albans were ordered into the field on another baking hot afternoon at Clarence Park against Ilford-based Old Sectonians CC.

‘Moksy’ Islam and Altaf Hussain opened the bowling for Saints on a green tinged wicket, which the opposition batsmen found to their liking as they were soon dispatching deliveries to all corners of the ground.
The two Andys - Saunders & Loe - were soon brought on to take pace off the ball , which worked for a while and resulted in Saunders picking up the wickets of two of the top three,
but some belligerent batting assisted by a fair amount of lax fielding saw the run rate soon climbing again.
The off spin of Josh Mulvaney took another wicket and Steven Steinmetz dismissed the dangerous opener for 94 but none of the bowlers found it easy against an aggressive batting line-up on a benign wicket (not helped by several dropped catches and avoidable fielding errors) and at tea an intimidating 287 was posted from the opposition’s 40 overs.

Saints openers Hugo Thomas and Peter Melling took to the field and started well enough before Thomas was rather unnecessarily run out for just 6. Melling continued to score though and was ably supported by Steinmetz who was looking comfortable before being caught behind for 19. Marcus Cunnington added 5 before his departure, and Josh Mulvaney 20 before being run out. All the while though Melling was accumulating runs steadily and was rewarded with a hard earned 50, eventually succumbing for a well-crafted 57.

An entertaining 65-run, 6th wicket partnership between our two ‘Bangladeshi Biffers’ Hussain (33) and Islam (39) took the Saints score past 200 and a 15-run flurry at the end between Loe and Milton meant the final total was a creditable 223, well short of the target but enough to save face, make a good game of it and give everyone involved a part to play in an enjoyable match.
