Match report An excellent knock of 83 no from the flu ridden Naveed Ahmed salvaged some pride from a game against a decent Priory Park CC team in which we dropped numerous catches and made life very difficult for ourselves....


St Albans took to the field first and a combination of short boundaries and a damp, dead pitch made life difficult for bowlers. Andrew Melling found the edge of an opener in the first over but it was shelled by skipper Andy Saunders . The batsman went on to make 89. To be fair he was dropped on a further 3 occasions by different fielders and several of his many mistimed shots and edges dropped agonisingly out of range of the fielders. Still , you make your own luck I guess.

The Priory Park innings closed on 201-7 after 35 overs.

Bowling highlights were tight, economical spells from Naveed Ahmed (6.0.21.0) and Jack Ypey (6.0.23.1) who slowed the run rate well and 2 wickets apiece from Saunders Senior and Saunders Junior with Saunders senior taking a splendid catch off his own bowling.

We were always going to be light on batting with only 3 recognised batsman in the team. Ypey after hitting 3 fours and a double played on to depart on 14 with fellow opener Hugh Sprowson bowled by a desperately unlucky ankle high ball on 5.

Naveed Ahmed to the crease then with things looking perilous. After some lucky escapes in the early part of his innings he found his rhythm and started to bludgeon fours and sixes to all parts of the ground. His first half century for the club was soon up and although he was finding little support from his batting partners the runs were flowing.

With 6 wickets down and 23 overs bowled of the allotted 35 Andy Saunders came out to pair up with Naveed and together they rotated the strike , kept the run rate ticking along and put on a near 50 partnership, which took them to the last over when Saunders was bowled on 17 trying to nurdle one off the back foot.

Young Ollie Mulvaney faced the last couple of balls , scoring 1 in the process and although we were 54 runs short of the target we had batted out the overs with wickets in hand and secured a draw. A decent achievement given the batting experience available to us .
