St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Darji CC on Sun 25 Jul 2021 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Morning drizzle made the chances of play at Verulam School Playing Fields seem increasingly slim but on arrival the outfield was fine and some requestioned brooms from the cleaning cupboard to sweep off excess water from the sheet on the playing strip revealed a bone dry surface underneath.

Rain was still in the air and the forecast was ominous so a shortened 25 overs per team game was agreed upon .

Skipper Andy Saunders duly lost the toss and Saints took to the field. Opening bowlers Altaf ‘Sunday Gun’ Hussain and Ian ‘Keanu’ Ireland started well and both bowled four over spells taking 3 wickets between them as the Darji batsmen struggled to get the ball away. Batsmen number 5 then top edged a ball from Ireland into his nose, which made a tremendous mess and necessitated a call to the paramedics who arrived remarkably quickly to treat him before he left, retired hurt. Always wear a helmet kids………

The first change bowlers were a fired-up Finlay Killner and Saunders, a right arm/left arm combination which slowed the run rate even further. Killner nipped out a batsman caught behind during his creditable four overs and Saunders added another 2 wickets, one a splendid catch by Ciaran Walsh in the covers, his second of the day .

By this time another batsmen had injured himself and a runner was called for as Rory law’s leg spin and Ciaran Walsh’s wobbly seamers were the next test on offer. Their 6 overs yielded a wicket for Walsh before Rohan Mupara came on to bowl his first competitive over for the club and indeed take his first competitive wicket shortly afterwards.

Saunders bowled the penultimate over - on 199 wickets for the club he watched as the batsman lofted a ball out to Mupara who…….well, the kindest expression would be “refused” it . The fireworks and feasting to celebrate his 200th will have to wait for another day.

92 all out then – a fine bowling performance to set up the run chase.

Manny Nisar and Dulon Ahmed were the opening pair for Saints and quickly climbed into the opening bowlers registering a 39-run partnership before both went in quick succession. The arrival of Rory Law saw an acceleration in the run rate as he bludgeoned a quickfire 40 comprised mainly of boundaries, ably partnered by Matt Shadwick who was an impressed observer for most of their time together .

When Law was eventually bowled , completely missing a comically slow ball, Shadwick was joined by wicketkeeper Tom Rayden , who had already enjoyed an excellent afternoon with the gloves, to see the game out, Rayden hitting a contemptuous 4 to seal the win.

All wrapped up before the rain arrived
