Ickenham v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Mon 04 May 2009 at 2pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won

Match report St Albans visited Ickenham of the Middlesex league for a delightful fixture on Bank Holiday Monday. New Sunday skipper Ben 'Rambo' Ramsay won the toss and batted and gave a cockle warming team talk to his troops in true Geordie fashion asking for intensity as well as bread and dripping for tea.

Ramsay set the example as he and Jim Chaudry (in a village pair of boots) put on 150 for the first wicket with some brutal hit's on a small ground. A typical Rambo refusal followed when he retired on 87, preventing himself from having to dust down the Geordie coppers in the bar as he sent in the middle order on a hiding to nothing. Stalwart Nick James fell cheaply and Chaudry fell for a classy 68. This brought together the hugely keen Amit Garg and Ickenham specialist Maritn Jones who has a history of causing carnage at this small ground, the neighbours had erected huge fences in shear hope that their windows and roofs would be spared. Garg played positively with a hint of Salman Butt as the pair got used to the slow wicket before an assault not dissimilar to the Normandy landings ensued as a number of balls were lost sailing out of the park. St Albans finished with 292 from 40 overs (Jones 68, Garg 40, Sir Clive Maynard 5*) and enjoyed a wonderful tea put on by the hosts.

The St Albans bowlers worked away building pressure with a spiralling run rate which much have felt like chains round the Ickenham top order's necks. A wicket apiece for the Canary Yellows in Yeo, who resembled Jason Gillespie (prior to his execution from test cricket by Michael Vaughan at Old Trafford in 2005) and Driscoll followed by an excellent controlling spell between Chaudry and Telkman who impressed with his seam again and showed he has more bowling talent than his older brother Sam Rowlands. But the star of the show again was man of the match Garg who ripped through the middle order with some sharp reverse swing which left the timbers bruised claiming 3 wickets. Rambo finished the job with the loopy tempters which got some treatment before cleaning up the tail.

An impressive display bodes well for the Chess Valley League which starts later in the summer.
