Essendon CC v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 13 Jul 2014 at 2pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost

Match report The 10 men of St Albans , a team of youthful energy combined with a couple of weathered veterans , ventured to the pretty village of Essendon on a muggy afternoon with a pessimistic forecast for rain.

In this friendly, timed game we put the opposition into bat who proceeded to rack up an impressive score of over 200 with solid contributions from several of their clearly experienced batsmen. Bowling on dry, slow pitch was tough but Townend got some notable early zip off the surface as did A.Melling - both took a wicket apiece . Skipper Still bowled an admirable spell of 10 tight overs finishing with figures of 3 for 40 and Paglou put in a good shift too ending his 5 over spell with 1 for 19.

Our fielding, sadly, wasn't up to scratch and several catches went down and a number of boundaries weren't prevented , which would have reduced the oppositions total considerably. Must try harder. Things weren't helped by having only 10 men in the field and an injured Saunders restricted to slip duties but we didn't make things easy for ourselves. Credit to Hicks for some fine wicketkeeping though.

And it was Hicks who shone with the bat for us too. Coming in after a dramatic collapse of the top order , which had started with a decent stand between Paglou and Townsend but crumbled after a hattrick which also included the scalps of A. Melling and Yew, Hicks (43) starred in an excellent partnership with Still (19), which ate up the overs and put us within range of a hard fought draw.

Still however found himself well caught at point and Hicks was run out so P. Melling and Pate came in bat out the last overs - Pate succumbed and last man Saunders , suffering badly with a side strain and unable to do more than block , needed to remain resolute for the remaining few overs. With just 5 balls remaining however Melling edged one to the keeper and the game was up . A brave stand but ultimately the better team won.

A good match, played in excellent spirit with everyone contributing - and it didn't rain.
