Match report St Albans Reach Highs and Lows Against Highgate.

In a topsy-turvy encounter, the Sunday 1s lost by just 3 runs away to Highgate. Highgate took full advantage of winning the toss, reaching 140-2 half-way through their innings. Young opening bowlers Ryan O’Neill and Joe Clouting bowled well but without luck – Ryan deserves particular credit for his efforts, coming so soon after his country’s Ashes annihilation. Miserly bowling from skipper Mark Telkman, his brother Jamie and Christian Hay reduced Highgate to 239-8 at the close. Ben Hicks also bowled well, dismissing both openers who had looked very dangerous.

In reply, St Albans were quickly reduced to 40-4, however Captain Telkman and Sam Rowlands more than steadied the ship, amassing a record 170 run 6th wicket partnership. Telkman returned to form, and was out for a mature 56 in the 40th over. Rowlands, having seen his way to 90 with a series of lusty blows (including a glorious pick-up over square leg for 6), scrambled his way to a maiden hundred. He finished on an ominous 111*, which was indeed not quite enough but never the less the exciting climax was a fitting end to a memorable match in the August sun.

A special mention must go to Highgate, who provided an excellent tea and were great hosts.
