Match report On the back of a narrow loss last week, St Albans II’s welcomed Hertingfordbury at Clarence Park. Saints lost the toss in murky conditions which were ideally suited to bowling first, and were invited to bat first. Saints found themselves in early trouble at 27-2 after only 9 overs, before a third wicket stand of 81 runs between seasoned campaigner Ian Mckinlay (62) and the more youthful Matthew Ingham (53) revived the innings with both making half-centuries. Mckinlay’s demise at 108-3 brought wicket keeper Chris Hodges to the crease, who hit a quick-fire 44 in the search for quick runs. A late flurry of both boundaries and wickets took the total to 213-8 from the allocated 50 overs; a good score in difficult batting conditions which offered swing and seam throughout the day.

In the search for early wickets, Saints started relatively poorly in bowling far too many wide’s, before 15 year old Jacob Whitfield (1-31) took his first 2nd team wicket, bowling Hertingfordbury’s opener for 13. Skipper Uttam Vijender brought himself on and took regular wickets throughout his spell, ending with a solid return of 3-30 off his 10 overs. Wobbly-kneed Afroz Khan was then brought into the attack and his extreme pace proved far too much for the opposition’s middle order and tail, ripping them out on his way to 4-13 from 6 overs. Hertingfordbury were eventually bowled out for 179, giving Saints a solid win by 34 runs. Extras proved the opposition’s top-scorer with 44, which must be reduced to beat the top teams in the division, but nevertheless a solid victory. Saints move upto second in Division 4B - onwards and upwards!
