Great Gaddesden I v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 95 runs

Match report The 3s visited picturesque Briden's Camp, on the Gaddesden Estate, to take on league cellar dwellers Great Gaddesden for their round nine fixture.

Batting first, Rudlin and Satsangi had to dig in with the host's opening bowlers finding some movement off the wicket and in the air, under overcast skies. After a watchful opening partnership, Ambrose chimed in with 3 quick wickets to set the cat among the pigeons with Rich Baylis coming to the crease. Baylis quickly found his stride, looking solid in defence while punishing anything else. Rudlin, searching for a little more momentum, was dismissed in the 34th over for a well made 39. Milnes struck a quick 22 to keep Saints in good shape.

With 12 overs of the maximum 53 remaining, the key partnership now followed, as Joe Button joined Baylis. In just over nine overs, these two compiled 72, through deft shot selection and frantic running between wickets. Button's towering six over long off forced the field to move to a more defensive setting, which both bats too advantage of. When Button departed for an invaluable 35, Murphy played a cameo featuring an audacious scoop shot. Baylis, dominant throughout, finished with an excellent, undefeated 81, and Telkman was able to declare an over early with the total on 228.

Tea was of a high standard - hopefully St Albans can return this in kind - and with runs on the board, Saints would have enjoyed it all the more.

Having perused Gaddensen's season record, it seemed clear that once the top order fell, wicket taking would get easier. As expected, Cheeseman looked the key wicket, and made the bowlers work hard. The total reached 60 for the loss of one wicket, with the run rate pretty much on track, but then the wickets did start to fall.

Rudlin took two terrific catches at short mid-off, both off Milnes, one the key wicket of opposition skipper Cheeseman. Thereafter, wickets fell steadily, and Telkman was able to go through most of his many bowling options, almost all finding success, as Great Gaddesden were unable to muster much of a challenge. Murphy and Walker snuck in with two wickets each, but Milnes, going at less than a run an over took the honours with 3/6.

The final margin, 95 runs, was an apt result, with Saints far better on the day, though not without encountering difficult periods, particularly early on. The batsmen deserve credit for their efforts.

That makes it back to back victories for the 3s. Up next is a visit to Flitwick.
