St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Bushey III on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report A controversial game saw St Albans 4XI suffer back to back defeats with an 8 wicket defeat to Bushey 3XI at SLCG .

Skipper Andy Saunders won a rare toss and opted to bat. Openers Nauman ‘Manny’ Nisar and Andy Loe built a solid base and kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely in the early overs, with Manny cutting and driving any wide stuff ferociously and Loe playing his usual supportive role. When Loe was eventually bowled the experienced Kevin Ralfe came to the crease and got a decent start before he too was bowled playing a loose shot across the line. In came his son Nick Ralfe who was his usual busy self in the middle notching a quickfire 23 before being sharply caught behind. From a solid and comfortable foundation Saints then proceeded to collapse in depressing fashion with batsman after batsman making poor decisions and giving away their wickets. The fact that the last 5 wickets went down for 15 should tell you everything you need to know.

146 all out at tea then – it felt like an ominously low total ….

Saints opening bowlers Christian ‘Haydog’ Hay and Craig Roseman bowled impressive and economical spells restricting the opposition batsmen to a low’ish run rate with Haydog taking out the off stump of their opener in his first over for the first of only two wickets claimed by Saints all innings. The scoreboard showed a manageable 30-0 after 10 overs. Then came the controversy……

A loud snick, a clear caught behind – 11 Saints players celebrate but the umpire’s finger doesn’t go up and the young batsman doesn’t walk …..We’ve all experienced it in the field , right? It never gets any easier to take. Particularly as only a few overs later a sharp, clear stumping of the same player by Kevin Ralfe saw the square leg umpire unmoved as well…… the batsman went on to get 77 .

Dave Ashton came into the attack and his wily off spin did eventually account for a stumping but by then it was too little too late as with wickets in hand the batsmen cut loose and after just 27 overs they surpassed Saints total.

Some dropped catches at crucial times didn’t help matters but in all honesty with a lack of runs on the board it was always going to be a struggle ……a sour taste in the mouth at the end then but we keep our heads up and prepare for the next battle in a week’s time.
