Abbots Langley v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 25 Jun 2017 at 1:00PM
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 11 runs

Match report In another Chess Valley nail-biter, St Albans narrowly lost to Abbots Langley by 11 runs.

Having lost the toss and asked to field first, St Albans struggled in the opening overs. Bowlers Winfield and Everdell had very little luck, and Abbots Langley got off to a fast start. The introduction of the Telkman brothers brought more control, with skipper Mark Telkman picking up the key wickets of both openers. Having pegged back Abbots Langley, their number 4 put pressure back on the bowlers with an almost flawless 100 – he should have been caught on about 60 if our overseas pro Mbeks had not ran away from the ball at long off. Credit should go to Adam Murphy who bowled exceptionally without luck on a flat wicket. Ben McInnes bowled well when the batters were looking for boundaries in the latter part of the innings, finishing with 4-72 off his allotted 10 overs. Andrew Williams picked up his first 2 chess valley wickets towards the end, whilst M Telkman picked up his third wicket to finish with 3-17 from 7 overs.

Chasing 258 to win, St Albans had a cautious start, but at 48-1, they looked well set to chase down a very gettable target. However, a flurry of wickets (mainly due to poor batting) left St Albans struggling at 73-6. Charlie Parkinson showed the way with a patient 39, demonstrating his future as a successful opener. Ben McInnes joined Jim Everdell at 114-7, and they put on 58 to keep hopes alive. Everdell was eventually out for an entertaining and powerful 46, but McInnes continued to score runs quickly with the help of Adam Murphy (19). McInnes got St Albans closer and closer, but with 12 runs to win with 7 balls remaining, he was the last man out for 74, his highest ever score.

Despite the heroics of Ben McInnes with both bat and ball, St Albans were left ruing the poor batting display from the top 7 which ultimately cost them. Another failed run chase for the Sunday 1XI, and more lessons to be learnt from before their next fixture against Wembley CC.
