Preston I v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 88 runs

Match report Winning the toss again, Capaldi decided to stick with St Albans’ winning formula by electing to field. Unfortunately for Capaldi, the Preston batsmen failed to bat quite as idiotically as Northwood, Bishop’s Stortford, and Holtwhites in weeks previously, Preston posting 245-6 off their 50 overs. Certainly the innings failed to get off to a flier, largely due to White’s economical bowling (only 5 runs off his first 6 overs), but the sensible innings of their overseas (111) put Preston in great stead to post an impressive score. Rosson bowled admirably for a man who barely resembled a functioning human being upon arrival to the ground, having gone to Veeda the night before, before dropping £25 in his driveway for Gary to recover the next morning. He took 3 wickets, one via an excellent stumping from Harry. Possibly the only other thing of note would be Howsebowling launching two head-high beamers in succession and not getting taken off on a technicality. A few dropped half-chances for St Albans proved to be costly but it was an impressive batting performance on a decent wicket, so skipper Capaldi certainly felt that 250 was a gettable target.

Unfortunately, what followed was a pretty farcical innings. To start with, their opener (who took 4-fer against St Albans last year) bowled 10-7-4-1, including 57 dots … without anybody really noticing. Despite this oddity, due to Preston’s slow start (and the persistent leaking of runs at the other end), St Albans were well up with the first inning’s worm on Total Cricket Scorer until the 20th over. However, the introduction of spin produced a flurry of wickets, as illustrated by the fact that only one St Albans batsman reached double figures. So enormous credit must go to White for an excellent innings of 82 despite the chaos surrounding him. In truth, it could have been many more as he found regularly found fielders with well-struck shots. With White’s dismissal ending the innings, St Albans could only manage 157 all out. The 1s hope to bounce back against Berkhamsted at Clarence Park on Saturday.
