St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1XI v Chertsey I on Sun 21 Aug 2005 at 1.30pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost St Albans lost by 7 wickets
In a bad tempered match, St Albans captain Simon 'Slug' Fretter' won the toss and elected to field.
This see,ed to have immediately seemed to have badfired when both openers were sitting back in the pavillion with just 8 on the board.
Fergie hung around for a while, without troubling the electronic scoreboard, watching James Rosson hit a quickfire 18, before being well caught. Fergie and Captain Slug were both run out, with Slug being advised by the fielding side that he was not out !!!!
The middle order fell apart, and at 62 -9 it looked like an early day. However, Jerry Fretter and Nick ' Slogger' James were not going to make it easy for the Chertsey side. This seemed to get under the skin of the some of the Chertsey players, who then thought that direct personal abuse was called for. This was not 'banter' or ' sledging', this was direct personal abuse, which was not picked up on by either umpire or the Chertsey captain, who all seemed to condone the language used !!!
St Albans saw out their 40 overs for just 135, which did not appear enough.
After a most delightful tea !!! St Albans set about with trying to restrict the Chertsey Batsman. Even a resounding speech from the Club Captain in the dressing room would not be enough.
The Chertsey batsmen came out swinging and easily knocked off the 135 runs, with 110 coming in boundaries !!.
Young James Rosson will bowl much worse and come out with better figures. Nick James found difficultly finding a consistant line, but was fairly economical...
Late call up Nassar Ahmad found some 'pies' and took two wickets with a long hop and full toss. Charles Smith seemed detirmed to get in the bar quickly with some wild, short bowling.
The match ended with more personal abuse from the Chertsey players, and a sour note was left at the end of the match..
A return next season .... I think not !!!!
