Essendon CC v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 14 Jul 2013 at 2.00pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost

Match report A roasting day in the pretty village of Essendon saw St Albans lose the toss and field first. With a pitch baked rock hard by the sun and a lightning fast outfield this was always going to be a tough ask for our younger bowlers against a team of experienced adult players . However, given the circumstances this was a decent effort in the field with nobody disgracing themselves and some notable bowling performances particularly from Andrew M and Tom P who took an intelligent and thoughtful approach to their work….Souvik (4-2-11-2) injected some pace into the attack but unfortunately pulled a muscle just when he was at his most threatening and had to retire from the bowling roster with fellow Sunday debutante Sriram also demonstrating some consistently impressive seam work….Too many dropped catches hampered our progress particularly when the opposition's most destructive batsman was put down early in his innings before gong on to notch a big score….Otherwise, as I say, it was a perfectly decent fielding performance and credit must go go to Harry K-J behind the stumps who had an excellent game and to John H and Rob S who both took great catches ….

Essenden set a big target of 238 and in this time format game it was always, frankly, going to be out of reach – the target was to bat out the overs…. Sriram opened the batting and notched an impressive 28 , all in 4's, before losing his wicket with the other members of the top 4 dismissed cheaply without getting into double figures. Souvik then smashed 11 before succumbing and it was left to Andy S (21) and Ed Y (16) to stubbornly occupy the crease and give the team a foundation on which to bat out the overs . Harry KJ put on a breezy 15 and shared a obdurate partnership with Andrew Melling before he was dismissed and it was left to Andrew M and Tom P to see out the last couple of overs. With men all round the bat and the pressure on the batsman mounting Andrew M's brave resistance was finally broken as the last wicket fell with only 3 balls left in the day.

The verdict – A battling performance from a St Albans team which included a number of younger players (and old duffers) against very good and experienced opposition in tough conditions.
