St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Abbots Langley I on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 7 wickets

Match report Simon White's 50-over vigil proved to be in vain as Saint Albans lost to Abbots Langley by 7 wickets at Clarence Park. White, who returned to the club after 14 seasons at Harpenden, scored 89 from 144 balls whilst partners frequently passed by. Choosing to bat, on what turned out to be a pitch which eased as the day passed, the hosts scored 193 for 8 from 50 overs. Hounslow, caught from a leading edge, and Howeson, trying to force the pace, fell early. Mabuza, returning to Clarence Park after a profitable 2016 season, began steadily and fell also whilst trying to increase the scoring rate. A flurry of wickets brought Phil Caley to the crease and a partnership of 56 in 11 overs with White set a reasonable target.

After a cautious opening 4 overs, the innings burst in to life as Read picked up 6 boundaries in 2 overs, although one was a chance to first slip which flew by. Another chance, on 44, was missed and the opener took full advantage to score his first League 100 from 88 balls. Howeson tried 6 bowlers before bringing himself on to immediate effect as Read hit a full toss straight to Winfield. Carson reached a more sedate 50 before Howeson bowled him and Winfield picked up a deserved wicket, the visitors closing out the game with 15 overs to spare.

In summary, an abject performance from the 1XI this week, Simon White aside generally we were below par with the bat, a poor fielding and bowling performance possibly a bigger issue. Attempting to defend a total that could have, with tight bowling and fielding been defended, we were found lacking in both commitment and application. A return of 9 points as much as was deserved, and with the bottom 2 sides losing, Saints remain in 8th place.

Next week is a trip to north London to play Holtwhites Trinibis, with a significantly improved performance required!
