Match report The sun didn’t shine in the direction of the 3XI as they succumbed to a first defeat in 5 at the SLCG to promotion-challengers, Datchworth.

The away side won the toss and chose to bowl first on what looked a dry wicket. With the boundaries brought in and the outfield fast, Saints were not unhappy at being inserted.

St. Albans got off to the perfect start with both openers finding their feet with early boundaries. Gemmill (43), in particular, timed the ball superbly. However, Saints slipped from 65-0 to 90-5 as some accurate bowling coupled with poor shot selection triggered a mini collapse. Dean (53) and Vijender (54) were able to steady the ship, and combined extravagant strokeplay with good running between the wickets to push Saints to the pre-innings target of 200. A late flurry from the lower order powerhouse of Button and Murphy pushed St. Albans to a very competitive total of 225-8 off their 53 overs.

Datchworth made an excellent start to their innings with both openers latching onto anything off line. Shortly after the Datchworth openers brought up their 100 partnership, Dean made a key breakthrough by removing Bonser LBW for 40. Despite regularly challenging the batsman, the Saints bowlers too often tried to force the wicket and resulted in gifting scoring opportunities to the opposition batsmen. Pointing brought up a very well made hundred and in so doing so, took the game away from St. Albans. Despite a late flurry of wickets led primarily by a hostile spell from Watkins (3-21), Datchworth rarely looked out of control and in the end got home with 8 overs to spare.

St. Albans were left to rue an opportunity to climb the table, however should not be disheartened in what was a rare below-par bowling performance. Results elsewhere meant and a good points haul meant Saints climbed another place in the table and still retain hopes of a late promotion surge.
