Old Cholmeleians II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 01 Jun 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 132 runs

Match report Following a confidence restoring victory at home the previous week, the IIIs travelled to north London to take on Old Cholmeleians, their opponents sitting level on points after three rounds.

An early start had been agreed, to allow teams to get away early for the Champions League final; in fact the opposition skipper was himself absent, in Madrid. Under blue skies, Walker won his fourth successive toss, and for the first time chose to bat.

Murray and Parkinson began well, assisted by a number of extras derived from wayward bowling, a theme that was to continue throughout the innings. With the score on 42, Murray was unfortunate to be adjudged LBW; Mistry followed in the same fashion shortly after - a theme was set here, too, with five LBWs in the innings. Parkinson and Islam (21) took the score to 93, taking advantage as a depleted opposition sought to find the right bowling combination. Parkinson contributed a solid 33, holding the innings together, and Lawrence was able to keep the runs flowing with his 26, yet Saints top six had all been dismissed by the time the score reached 143. Against a faltering bowling unit, lacking a great deal of control, the threat of an under par total remained.

O’Toole was not going to let that happen, and he dominated the final 19 overs of the innings. Firstly, in partnership with Walker (27), 75 runs were added in 10 overs before Walker slapped a wide delivery to the only fieldsman inside the nominal circle on the offside. O’Toole stepped up the attack in a further partnership of 77 with Murphy, an Irish pairing of sorts. For a time, O’Toole looked set to reach a ton, but didn’t quite have enough of the strike near the end of the innings, so instead he had to settle for 90 not out, a classy innings.

Saints had reached an impressive 45 over tally of 295, the value of a big knock and solid partnerships clearly shown. Mind you, it’s worth noting that second top scorer was extras, aggregating 55. Old Cholmeleians had toiled hard on a warm afternoon, and with a man short, but must have been disappointed with this, also a contributor to a languid over rate.

By this time, the skipper had discovered the absence of his cricket trousers from his kit bag, forcing him to use a pair borrowed from the somewhat larger O’Toole. The resulting baggy trousered, tucked-into-socks look was reminiscent of Aladdin, somewhat out of place on a cricket field in north London - a village would have been a more appropriate setting.

In a week with good availability across the club, the IIIs had acquired Smith and Telkman from the seconds, and they duly opened the bowling. A number of chances were missed, Telkman unfortunate to see a number of edges pass through the slips cordon and run to the boundary. Smith claimed the first wicket in a tidy spell. Murphy was introduced to the attack and began well, picking up wickets in his first two overs, finishing with 2/31. Button had entered the fray from the top end and bowled the day’s best and fastest spell, yet was unable to grab the wickets he deserved.

Instead, it was Mistry (3/36) and “Aladdin” Walker (3/12) who chimed in to destroy the rest of the Old Cholms lineup. In truth, with such a large total on the board, Saints looked victors from the halfway mark, affording opportunities to set attacking fields and mix up the bowling. The hosts’ top order had fought well in such circumstances.

Only some lapses in the field were cause for disappointment, however with contributions across the XI, this was a very solid outing as the margin of 132 runs highlights. Having enjoyed the hospitality of the hosts, Saints returned to Clarence Park to see the seconds manage a great victory and spend some team with club mates, a good day done.
