St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Hoddesdon on Sat 03 Aug 2002 at 12:30

Match report Boring, boring Hoddesdon they chanted from the terraces, or would have done if they were still awake. An extremely annoying finish to what had looked like it might be a good day for St Albans.

Having been inserted on a wet one, St Albans openers did a job in seeing of the new ball early before Matt Howeson was undone for 10. Roger Edbrooke and Iain Curtis played well to stay in against some tight and testing bowling, before Roger was caught behind for 25. Josh Holt came in at number 4 after an extended lie and got off to his usual brisk start, briefly making it look easy before departing caught attempting to hit over the top. As Gilbert departed quickly St Albans were left on 76-4 at lunch after 33 overs and Hoddesdon looked to have the upper hand. After lunch saw St Albans turn the game around in no uncertain terms. Iain Curtis continued to bat sensibly while Phil Caely smote the ball to all parts of the ground making an exceptional 125. Caley played the ball to all parts of the ground, with great power and never looked like getting out, until strangely his helmet fell off on to his stumps as he swayed away from a ball that had jumped off a length. Andy Jones came in at the end to hit some fine blows in a quick fire 17. St Albans were very happy with their 262-6.

Having stuck their opposition in to bat first one would have expected Hoddesdon to come out ready for a chase, with their strong battiung line up. However it became appraent at a very early stage that there was no interest in chasing St Albans total. Hoddesdon clearly felt they had no batting beyond 5 as they completely shut up shop early and ruined what had been promising to be an exciting days cricket. Hoddesdon only made any effort to score runs very late on in the game when they pushed from 120-3 to 150-6 in the last 6 overs chasing an extra bonus point.

A good days cricket from St Albans, it was just a shame that Hoddesdon would rather ensure they didn't lose instead of trying to win.
