St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v Gully Boys XI on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won on DLS

Match report After the hottest day of the year on Friday, players were hoping for some sunshine and a decent day of cricket on Saturday which turned out to be a mix of sunshine, clouds and rain. We were short by a player even after drafting in father and son duo of Andy and Harry K.J. at last minute and were asked to bowl first. Tom Townend and Tom Banks, making his adults debut, opened the bowling and bowled excellent line and length. Gully boys were soon 16-3 after 3 overs including a first ball wicket yet again by Tom T. Gully boys continued playing positive cricket although kept losing wickets at regular intervals due to sharp fielding and good bowling by 5XI. Some good hitting by centurion Fenyl Dani (100*) helped Gully boys reach a very competitive total of 222 off 40 overs. Not to mention some of the huge sixes hit by Rory from 3XI on the adjacent ground and returning the ball back to them kept distracting 5XI fielders, who are we kidding, it was an absolute treat to watch even from a distance.

At the break 5XI seemed nervously confident of chasing the total with a player short as well. But Andy had other plans and gave a good start after opening the innings with Harry who was unlucky to be out on a yorker. Marcus gave good support to Andy who was in a real hurry to chase the total down and leave before 6 pm. Andy played like veteran and punished the bad balls to all parts of the ground while respectfully defending the good ones. Even with 8 fielders on the boundary Andy was able to pick gaps and hit fours with ease. Andy smashed 17 fours and 1 six in his innings of 101* and retired with 45 odd runs needed in 17 overs. The run rate slowed down a little after Andy’s retirement and we lost a couple of wickets including Jack who finally got a chance to bat and was looking good but was unlucky to be run out. The light drizzle started becoming heavy when Saints were in a comfortable position of needing 34 runs from 12 overs with 5 wickets in hand. The opposition were more than glad to agree that we won on DLS as they didn’t want to come out after all the battering they have had and didn’t wanted to field on a wet ground even after the rain stopped. Saints finished on 189-4 off 28 overs.
