St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report After a day of rain on Friday and some heavy Saturday showers it was a remarkable effort by Phil Caley to get the game on at all. However, a lost toss meant St Albans were always going to be up against it batting first.

Debutant Seagrave and Hounslow opened up running well and blunting the Berko attack. However, both fell to remarkable catches. Regan came in and looked to up the tempo hitting three crisp four before perishing trying to repeat the act.

As the overs started to whittle away White also came and went looking to force the pace. All this time at the other end Howeson (40*) was anchoring the innings picking up singles well and using the large Clarence park expanse to pick up twos. Capaldi joined Howeson and managed to force the ball through the leg side effectively.

Both Capaldi and then Hall fell in the same manner trying to hit the ball over the infield and when Winfield was run out it was left to Caley and Howeson to take St Albans up to a par 113 from their 33 overs.

St Abans knew that they would have to start well on what was a tricky pitch to bat on if you bowled the ball in the right areas. Roche – probably the most unlucky bowler in the league beat the edge like his has so often this season and when he found the edge went agonisingly past White in the slips. White at the other end bowled a good line and was unlucky when an early simply chance was dropped.

The Berko opening batsman rode their luck at times but also punished some bad lengths which were bowled. This partnership of 80 killed the game and it was Seagrave who bought positives to the St Albans fielding display. On debut he bowled with great control managing to return figures of 3-16 from his 7 overs – a fantastic debut game.

A disappointed weekend against a team sitting below them but a large amount of the game was decided on the toss. Onto next week where we visit a Chorelywood side in the promotion spots.
