Watford Town 1 v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 07 Sep 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 18 runs

Match report St Albans travelled to Watford for the last game of the season and found an interesting dilemma in that the stumps at either end did not line up. After orientating us to the angled pitch St Albans lost the toss and ended up in the field.

Roche and White opened up the bowling and found Watford in aggressive mood and after 10 overs Watford had raced to 60 without loss with Roche going for 30 runs in his first 3 overs. Capaldi broke the opening partnership with Roche taking a good catch at mid off and the returning Roche managed to bowl the other opener as he tried to sweep one from well outside off stump. The electric Roche then effective a run out as he was quick to the ball and delivered an aggressive through to run the batsman out.

Then came a site that we havent seen all year. Winfield after a fresh trim in the week decided he was going to concentrate on his bowling and managed to get the ball to talk beating the bat on numerous occasions and was unlucky to pick up only one wicket. A back niggle for Regan saw Howeson run off to strap on the bowling boots and his unique action caught Watford off guard as he managed to pick up two wickets in his first over.

However, this was the last wicket for a while as the 8th wicket partnership of 95 put Watford firmly in control of the game. St Albans always thought a chance was coming and numerous balls fell short of fielders. Winfield returned at the end to mop up the last two wickets to fall to finish with 3-44.

St Albans knew a good start was needed and they didn't get it as Capaldi was bowled in the second over. Debutant Caswell and Coulman then put on 63 runs for the second wicket and looked comfortable. Columan after three full tosses in a row took it upon himself to run past the forth one and then Howeson got his third wicket of the match running out Caswell for a well made 40. Howeson then remarkably got his forth of the game running himself out after a good partnership between himself and Rudlin.

Rudlin was knocking the ball around well until he missed a straight one and was out both lbw and bowled before White was bowled trying to force the pace along. Winfield joined Kendel at the crease with 70 needed off the last 10. Kendal decided the bring out his first attempted scoop of the season and swiftly got bowled which bought Jacob 'Coach' Roche to the crease.

Coach and Winfield kept St Albans in the game all the way to the end. Coach got his eye in playing and missing at 9 in a row before realising Watford didn't have a third man in and deliberately edged it down to third man. Some good running from Winfield to support Coach saw 40 runs added and Coach was unlucky to perish trying to clear the pavilion. Caley having demoted himself to 11 was prowling the boundary edge ready to go in and win the game but unfortunately Winfield declined a quick two with Caley half way down for the second and from the next ball was bowled.

A safe mid table finish for the second year in a row and one to build on for next year.
