Redbourn 1 v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 24 Jul 2021 at 12.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 187 runs

Match report For the second week in a row St Albans suffered a chastening defeat.

Upon winning the toss on a damp pitch Redbourn decided to bat and the tone for the day was set in the opening exchanges and after 7 overs managed to bring up a 50 run opening partnership. On a small ground St Albans knew runs would flow but half trackers, full tosses and half volleys were served up on numerous occasions.

The introduction of spin in the form of Mulveney and Capaldi saw the run rate slow slightly and the 87 run opening partnership was broken by a good catch from White on the boundary.

Mulveney on a day where St Albans travelled to all parts went at under 4 an over and bowled with great skill and picked up the second wicket to fall probably from his worst ball of the day but great reward for a momentum changing spell nonetheless. His spell was backed up incredibly well by White who was unlucky not to see an lbw appeal adjudged in his favour.

After drinks once Mulveney finished the opening bowlers were given another crack however this was swiftly dispatched to all parts by Redbourn and St Albans were testing the depth of their bowling once Regans sole over failed to land any balls in the batsmans half of the pitch. 9 overs between 3 bowlers which went for over 100 runs was a something which was to be rued at the end of the day.

With bowlers averting their gaze from the captain up stepped Hall and Perrin for their first overs of the season. What followed was a turn of events which saw St Albans grab some sort of foothold in the game. Hall bowled with great control and got two aesthetically pleasing offspinners wickets and Perrin lobbed them up to good effect drawing two further wickets.

After the spin twins got some momentum back into the fielding innings Oliver ‘Gazelle’ Coulman showed us why he has been wasted behind the stumps all year with two direct hits in two overs to the surprise of himself and the rest of the team. Once the final wicket was taken in the last over 297 although a big score was one on a small pitch and good wicket one that could have been chasuble.

The St Albans innings got off to a dreadful start. Perrin got the only ball which stayed low all day and was out lbw and next over Regan was strangled down the legside. Jerome came in and looked at ease on the pitch stroking the ball around the pitch with some very pleasing cover drives.

However, when you are chasing 6 an over the runs need to come regularly and despite a good run rates wickets were lost at regular intervals as batsman looked to be positive and score runs.

A sorry innings was finished in the 34th over with only 110 on the board as a heavy defeat was registered and some soul searching done by the team afterwards leaving promotion now as a very outside possibility.
