St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Darji CC on Sun 23 May 2021 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 143 runs

Match report The week’s appalling weather forced the Sunday 2XI to reschedule their planned fixture over to the artificial Astro wicket at Verulam School Playing Fields.

With a strong batting line-up it was an obvious decision to bat first! Having won the toss skipper Nauman ‘Manny’ Nisar opened the St Albans innings with Alisdair Sargen and the pair put on a useful 40 partnership before Alisdair departed in the 8th over after top edging a pull shot. Saqib came in at number 3 in an aggressive mood and smashed a flurry of boundaries including a massive 6 before being stumped. Sammy was in at 4 in good batting form but was done all ends up by a pearler of an inswinger from the tricky left-armer “Big H” who went on to take 3 wickets from his 8 overs.

This bought Naveed Ahmed to the crease who set about building a match winning 100 partnership with Manny. Nav (bat maker and repairer extraordinaire and little seen in recent times) got to 50 in no time punishing anything short, wide or over pitched and accelerated the run rate after drinks on his way to a rip roaring 73 in his first innings for a long time . Run machine Manny finished on unbeaten 86 to take the eventual total to an impressive 250 at tea.

Saud Fattah and Altaf Hussain opened the bowling for Saints and bowled good, tight lines as always. Saud forced a run out early on and then clean bowled the opener , beating him for pace. Another run out from Saud’s bowlling shortly after left everyone stunned - he sent down a frankly average delivery, which was smashed back at him with brute force and instinctively sticking out a hand flicked the ball onto the non- strikers stumps via the tip of his fingers. To the middle next came our own Dulon Ahmed - on loan to the oppo for the day - who inadvertently helped his real teammates by running out their number 4 before mistiming one straight to a fielder. Their number 6 was a good bat and took the attack to Saints on his way to a half century , which forced a bowling change and the introduction of Saqib to put the pressure on. With Harry ‘HKJ’ Knill-Jones bowling well at the other end it was Saqib’s devastating spell of 3-14 which helped Saints sail home to a comfortable victory after bowling out the oppo for just 107 in 25 overs.

An impressive win against an opposition we have struggled against in the past on a very cold and windy day!
