Hoddesdon 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 03 Jun 2023 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report After a glorious week of weather Saints made another fairly long journey up
to Hoddesdon. The team arrived in one piece but with the lack of a car park at
Hoddesdon CC a couple of players found themselves in a real mess when
parking. In particular O’Toole and Baylis, the latter’s journey down a footpath
almost leading to severe consequences. What followed was probably the best
warm up in memory from the yellows and with captain Regan winning the toss
and batting, it seemed little could go wrong.
With Hoddesdon being possibly the smallest ground in the Herts league it was
expected to be a high scoring game with boundaries aplenty. Sadly, for us it
didn’t get off to the best of starts. Joe firstly getting a questionable LBW
decision was followed by a series of dismissals that no batsman wanted to
watch back on the Hoddesdon YouTube channel. Unfortunately for some this
situation was forced upon them in the bar after the game.
Following suit from the last two weeks, the innings wouldn’t have been
complete without another calamitous run out. This time Mude and Capaldi
involved with the former outraged as he trudged off the pitch. At 75/9 a score
of 100 even seemed a long way off but Hounslow and Adshead’s partnership
of 25 (the highest of the innings) got them exactly there before Adshead
played all round a straight delivery from Hoddesdon’s overseas. Hounslow left
stranded, still without an average and considering a hit wicket dismissal next
time round.
Defending such a small total was going to be a near impossible task but the
yellows didn’t give up and showed some very positive energy in the field.
Along the way even as the game got away there were still some moments of
great value. Hounslow halting a ticket inspector mid-match to organize car
movement a real highlight, before retrieving the ball from the block of flats
Adshead had just been hit into.
There were deserved c+b’s for Regan and Baylis who ran in and gave it
everything until the end, and a smart catch down the leg side from Mude off
the bowling of Mitchell who was unlucky only to take one wicket.
In summary, this was a real off day for the 1s and not at all a reflection of the
ability of this team. The brief coloured kit cameo is over for now as attentions
turn to timed cricket, returning to Clarence Park for the first time since 2017.
With long standing rivals Redbourn the visitors, there really would be no
better way to bounce back from a disappointing day out.
