St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Ickenham on Sun 07 Aug 2005 at NOTE : 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 46 runs

Match report Yet another defeat in the Chess Valley League. However, the scorebook does not really reflect the game.

Having lost the toss, St Albans were asked to field and watch the ball edge and fly past fielders in air. It could have been so different. The No.2 got 41... somehow !!! The other opener and Captain seemed to have more lives than a cat. He was dropped, edged, mis-hit his way to 105 before a Fretter double (part of quartet of Fretter's in the game) saw him depart.

Good bowling from Eddie Hughes and Sam Rowlands took the pace of the ball and they both could have had more wickets betwen them. Simon Fretter came on and took two late wickets.

240 was only a par score, but some of the St Albans batsmen seem to think this was beyond them. Not a very promising attitude to have...

The innings started slowly and never really took off. Adam Potter played the usual Potter innings, a mixture a big hits and mis-cues, but this it what the innings really required, a kick start. Potter departed for 40 (out of 57 partnership), his highest score in senior cricket.

Andy Rudlin nudged and pushed for singles, but was a spectator as she saw No.s 3,4&5 all depart for a combined score of 9.

Andy Rudlin himself then fell having scored 18 from 21 overs. Tim Fretter tried to liven the innings but fell cheaply, and it was left to Simon ' The Slug' Fretter on his 21st birthday to show the other 11 that batting was really that easy. A mixture of straight lofted shots and back-foot drives, worthy of 1st XI players (but then again it was Sunday !!!!!! :-( all tucked up elsewhere !! ), saw him kick-start the innings. Sadly at that point the run-rate required was 10 an over. Simon was still hopeful of getting somewhere near it with 10 overs left.

Sam Rowlands supported him well, until one shot too many from the Slug saw a think edge behind for very good, weel made and harding hitting 55. It was time for Rowlands to open up, and play a net innings for himself, as the game seemed beyond St Albans. A late, brief cameo from Eddie Hughes (21no) saw St Albans finish on 194/8.

A little more positive start, coupled with someone, anyone, in the middle order getting runs and a win could have been on the cards. Good news 6 players under 21 years old...........
