Match report On a wet day, Saints took to the road, determined to take home 30 points from their visit to bottom of the table Chipperfield Clarendon. They managed it by the skin of their teeth.
Put in to bat, the home side started slowly, with attacking fields - as many as six men in catching positions - yielding neither wickets nor adventurous batting. Mark Telkman finished with 3 wickets on a pitch that offered some assistance. In 53 overs, the home side managed just 138/7, a total that looked comfortably within reach.
However, a packed St.Albans batting lineup never quite got going until Charlie Bowskill managed 28. At 81/7, though, there was much work to do, and with a rain interuption reducing the overs available, the home side sniffed victory. Two old pros, Pullan and Walker, got the IIIs back on track adding 40 runs in quick time against a tiring pair of bowlers - the only two used. But both bats fell in a hurry, leaving the last pair of Charlie Smith and Neil Telkman to manage 14 runs in 12 overs. Gently they pushed towards the target, nudging the odd single here and there. The last over began with scores level, and its first ball slid past the keeper for four byes to bring relief.
This was a well fought match, played in difficult conditions and credit must go to the opposition for their willingness to play on - indeed this was the only match in the division to complete on the day. 30 valuable points for the IIIs.
