Match report The 4th XI fell agonisingly short of victory at Northampton Exiles III.

On a rare hot day, St.Albans took the field first, with Exiles running up a total of 128. Saunders and James did the hard work up front, with Ashton and Walker (3 wickets each) finishing things off.

However, the total of 128 doesn't tell the full story - for in two separate spells, the IVs took 6/44 and 4/0. Separating these wicket-taking sprees was an 84 run partnership for the 7th wicket. Batsmen Manjrekar and Cheema both played carefree innings, choosing to loft the ball repeatedly. As the tally increased, the heat seemed to have taken the sting out of St.Albans in the field, several lacklustre efforts being noted, and numerous chances and half chances were missed.

Saints made a decent start, cutting the target to less than 100 by tea. Afterwards, James (29) lead the way, but wickets fell more regularly than wanted. Fortunately, a rearguard action kept the target in sight. Calverley's positive 17 was handy and the final wicket partnership between Saunders and Ashton brought things mighty close. In the end, not even innings top scorer, Extras, with 37, could take Saints over the line, Exiles home by 6 runs.

A disappointing result, but surely some lessons learned, and 12 points help keep the IVs ahead of the relegation pack.
