St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Radlett IV on Sat 08 Sep 2012 at 12.30 pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
St.Albans IIIs applied the lessons learned from previous close encounters to earn a nerve-shredding 1 wicket victory at Verulam School, to close out their season on a high.
Radlett IVs chose to bat first, and once again Saints started with nine rather than eleven. With a strong bowling lineup, options were available to skipper Furnival, and Fleming and Stamp both began with rivetting opening spells. Having joined the party late, Ash Shah then chimed in with three wickets. Some excellent catches, particularly Hancock's double take at mid wicket, kept the pressure on. From 100/7, the visitors mounted something of a comeback, lead by Fabray's 51. St.Albans appeared to have wilted under the sun, all facets of their game deteriorating before Stamp returned to wrap things up to finish with four wickets.
197 runs was the target set; perhaps more than St.Albans had chased through the season, but Radlett's rearguard action had highlighted the short boundaries and fast outfield, so Saints took some confidence into their chase. Abbas Shah played a powerful knock, and the runs flowed freely, as all the top order chipped in to keep the run rate high. Shah's fall for a well made 72 triggered a collapse of typical proportions (Pervez taking 6/56), eventually leaving last pair Fleming (33no) and Stamp with 20-odd to get. Fortunately their class proved too much for desperate Radlett.
This was a solid win for the better team. With the sun shining like July and a well executed team win, this felt like setting the scene for a late season charge towards promotion. Instead, this was the sun setting, brightly, on an underperforming, unfulfilled season for the IIIs. Roll on 2013!
