Shenley v St Albans Cricket Club Men's Indoor on Wed 18 Oct 2006 at 21:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won 88 Runs
Match report
St Albans V’s Shenley.
And the Saints go marching on……
Galloway proved what a useless tosser he is; he was again out-tossed by the opposition captain. Nevertheless the inserted Saint Albans batting line up took the opportunity to finally realise how to bat in doors, The openers Howeson and Jones looked Inzi-esq in their approach to setting a total, happy to stand and hit, not so happy to run!
Eventually, after he stood and watched Howeson run two on his own and still make his ground, it dawned on Jones that he’s only required to run 15 yards in order to turn one’s in to 3’s. Hungry to improve his average, Jones started running and soon retired replacing Galloway in the no doubt rather smelly Guantanamo gage (Skip, is that curry still lurking?).
Stat of the week, Jones has now mentioned his average 1,257 times this week, for those interested, oh no one is, never mind.
Matty soon followed the road to retirement after reaching 25, representing a 25 fold increase in his current form. The next phase of the game I had to investigate and seek opinion of fellow players, but they were sleeping too, so I asked the umpire, apparently, Galloway put the breaks on for the middle 4 overs, O’Toole failed with the bat, citing extreme boredom as the motivation for holing out!
Eventually the skipper got to 25 and retired, it was a welcome relief to hear the ball hitting the back wall again, which is exactly what Longhurst did, opening his account with an on-drive for six, a flurry of activity saw Longhurst and Berwick add runs quickly both getting in to the 20’s before Longhurst chipped to long on, however Berwick went on to retirement meaning that the openers could return, having watched how it can be done proceeded to nudge and run bumping the St Albans total to a club record 170 (2.36 a ball).
The second half was always going to be a struggle for Shenley, the daunting prospect of needing 171 was compounded but the quality of the opening attack. One plucky opener decided to go on the charge, only to be put firmly back in his box after wearing a short ball from Longhurst, a few whines and moans (he was a southern hemisphere import so what do you expect) he soon realised that he had no hope and his evening would be more fruitful working in a bar somewhere, never the less he stuck around for the duration, watching his team fall around him, good catches, straight bowling, tidy keeping and Collingwood like fielding was the order of the St Albans spell in the field. Still the barman from Buggaluggaboo stuck around, and the innings fizzle out, a mere 89 runs short. Post match; O’Toole scarpered quickly, keen not to discuss his 2 runs while the rest of the successful batting line up swapped stories and ideas on how to prevent Jones mentioning his average ever again.
