Match report Season 2013 opened for St Albans IIIs with a crushing victory over Letchworth Garden City at Clarence Park.

Hay's opening delivery yielded a yelp in appeal, as he and opening partner Hancock quickly found their lines. Hancock's full but wide delivery brought the first wicket of the season, the safe hands of Furnival completing a catch in cover. More soon followed, with Hancock (4/29) twice knocking over middle stump and Hay producing some fine deliveries, none more so than a ripper to dismiss number 4 Bishton.

The catching was tremendous in support; rarely has the third XI seen better all round. Seven chances were offered, and all held, with a right handed screamer snatched inches from the ground in slip by Ferguson the best of the lot. (Eames, by contrast, chose to approach a simple head-high slips catch by raising just the one hand, the other arm tucked safely behind his back disdainfully - screams of a different kind and disbelief from the batsman.)

Warren chimed in with three late wickets in a hurry, and Letchworth finished on a meagre 74, having not reached the drinks break.

In response, St Albans quickly knocked off the runs, Nisar's confidence growing with 31 not out. Drinks were duly taken, in the bar, from 4:30. Encouraging signs, then, to start the new season, though one might expect tougher opposition to come.
