Match report
OACC EDGED OUT BY ST ALBANS IN PRE-SEASON 40-OVER GAMEcloseOACC EDGED OUT BY ST ALBANS IN PRE-SEASON 40-OVER GAME
On a cloudy afternoon which gave way to sunny intervals and brief showers that were not as heavy as forecast, OACC won the toss and chose to bat first against local rivals St Albans in a game fixed for 40 overs a side with 8 overs per bowler.
On a wicket affording some movement, OACC were immediately bogged down and found it hard to gain any sort of momentum, losing Joe Regan early, caught behind for a duck. The normally free-scoring Zahid Ali Khan was tightly shackled, and in his first 5 overs Daniel Rosson, with his left arm seam, conceded only one scoring stroke - a 6 over mid-wicket from Khan. After 11 overs, the score was a mere 27-1, and the batsmen's travails continued up till drinks at 20 overs, with just 7 further runs being added for the further loss of Alf Rehman for a typically dogged 15. But after drinks, the innings changed course significantly as Khan and Jack Reynolds moved up through the gears and showed that, with care and good shot selection, runs could be made. They added 88 with increasing fluency, and aggressive running, to take the score to 116 in the 36th over, when Khan was out for 62 (50 in 96 balls), caught at long-on, trying for a 3rd 6 in 4 balls in that area. The remainder of the innings saw a blitzkrieg attack from the OACC batsmen that took the score to a respectable 152-5 with Usman Malik landing another 6 off the final delivery.
How good that score would be was unclear, given that in the second 20 overs of their innings OACC had added no less than 118 at almost exactly a run a ball. The first 11 oversof the reply brought just 23 runs for the loss of Chanda and Aaron Jones, and when Matt Howeson fell off the first ball of the next over for 16, St Albans were in some trouble at 23-3. But Craig Bennett Scotcher clubbed 4 of his first 5 balls for 4, and St Albans were back up near the required rate. Wickets nevertheless continued to fall, and after 16 overs the score was 53-6 and an OACC victory seemed possible. However from this point the experienced Phil Caley gained some control, aided by determined defence from Mark Telkman, and the further breakthrough that OAs needed did not materialise. Caley made 40 off 44 balls before succumbing to a good catch at long-on by Jimmy Hayat with the score on 101 in the 29th over, and this brought skipper Martin Jones to the crease. Jones continued to exercise the control that Caley had started, scoring 26* in 28 balls to mastermind the final stages of the chase. He lost Telkman when the score was at 131, but this brought in Richard O'Toole, who took advantage of some wayward bowling at the end to rattle up 16* off 13 balls and see St Albans over the finishing line with 4 balls to spare.
